Mount Salem Church

Mount Salem Church

Today, Palm Sunday, is the beginning of Holy Week, and it seems to be a good time to share some of my church paintings.  There will be more this week, but we'll start with Mount Salem Church in our Highlands neighborhood of Wilmington, at the end of the eponymous Mount Salem Lane.

This 10 x 8 acrylic painting was done as a wedding gift for a couple who were actively involved in the church and were marrying there.  The alpha and omega glyph is modeled on one in a church window.  The MtS monogram is my invention.

Mount Salem United Methodist Episcopal Church (http://www.mtsalemumc.org/) was founded in 1847, predating Highlands and its annexation to Wilmington.  It has been rebuilt twice, and the steeple was reconfigured to replace the 1879 craftsman style upper steeple with the current crenelated  Gothic revival structure.

This photo postcard shows the church with the earlier turret as Mount Salem Lane and Church Lane (now W 19th St.) were being lowered to accommodate the streetcar line.

There will be a few more church painting postings this week.  Keep tuned, and pass along the link.
