  Holy Trinity 1 A Movie and a Coke , the subject of my August 31 post, was the first of three 24 x 18 watercolor paintings I did as a commission from Nick Vouras.  The original Kozy Korner restaurant was an obvious choice for this painting.  The subject for the second painting was equally obvious.  Nick had long been active at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Wilmington's N Broom St. Since Nick had chaired the annual Greek Festival there several times, I chose to depict the church with festival dancers circling around the church. At the time I did this painting  the church's dome was in an incomplete stage of repair, covered with a black rubber membrane and its future was not then settled.  I presented the dome ambiguously, subject to the viewer's interpretation.  Holy Trinity was built in the late 1940s on the site of the former  Coleman DuPont residence at 808 N Broom St   At the time Mary was living on W 8th St with a backyard ...

  Studebaker & Willys At last Sunday's ACAA car show in Venice, FL a 1950 Studebaker and a 1950 Willys Overland Jeepster panel truck, both customized, were side by side.     In the mid 1950s I owned versions of both contemporary makes. A 1948 Studebaker Land Cruiser, here with my brother Michael, And here, my 1950 Willys Jeepster, which I bought for my newspaper motor delivery route.

  Cranes in the Mist The graceful stature and stately movement of sand hill cranes belies their raucous report. I spotted a group on the lawn at Maura and Bill's house on a visit to them in Florida in pre-Covid days. Bill cultivated orchids in the niches and crotches of their trees, so I added a reference grouping on my painting, "Cranes in the Mist."   Here is a phone pic of the noisy cranes on the lawn.  In the painting I fabricated the mist.        

  27 July 2021 BLACKGROUND PAINTINGS 2  FLORIDA FAUNA In and around Sarasota, FL I have snapped pictures that have served as references for later acrylic paintings.  Here's an armadillo that I ran across on a predawn walk on a golf course cart path.  In the small figures along the bottom the armadillo is rolling up into an armored protective ball.  Around our daughter's swimming pool, lizards scurry.  I've take liberties with the colors. Here's a more naturalistic lizard.   This anhinga was drying his wings along a reservoir walk in Venice, FL. The background line map is a 16th century Spanish representation of the west coast of Florida. I've signed it with a monogram mimicking Spanish calligraphy of that era. "Anhinga" is in a found frame.
