"Blackground" Paintings

Image
25 JL 2021 "BLACKGROUND "  PAINTINGS "Figments" (of my imagination) is a self-portrait in a fade-away style on a black ground.  I have done many paintings on a matte black ground, in this case with the figure in a fade-away to the black ground.  The gold line glyphs in a matrix behind the figure are elements of paintings I have done over the years.  For example "Hop, Skip, and Jump"...   are represented by a detail in the upper left of the painting. "Figments" is in a flea market found frame.  During the Covid-19 lock-down over the last year plus, I have done other paintings for found frames, including "Rosemary and Basil," an allegorical depiction of two herbs that Mary grows at our cottage.   The herbs themselves are present as garlands below the figures and as wreaths in their hair.  The signature monograms echo the herbal pattern. We'll visit more blackground paintings over a few days.
