El Santuario de Chimayo Shrine

A few years ago Mary And I visited some long time friends in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  We spent one memorable day visiting historic missions and churches in the Santa Fe area.  The most notable of these was the shrine El Santuario de Chimayó,  a pilgrimage destination.  The shrine’s “healing dirt” is ascribed to have healing properties  comparable to the waters of Lourdes.  After returning home, I painted a 10 x 8 in acrylic as a thank you gift for our friends.

The painting is in a soft edge manner with a limited palette.  The gold cross/sun glyph in the sky is a variation of the Zuni sun symbol on the New Mexico Flag, one of the country’s most beautiful flags.

You can read more about the shrine at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Santuario_de_Chimayo

We’ll visit another church in the next posting.
