ΑΓΙΑ ΤΡΙΑΣ

Holy Trinity

This is the largest and most elaborate of the church paintings I’ve posted this week, at 24 x 18 inches, acrylic on canvas.  Some of the acrylic paint is metallic pigmented.

The painting was done as a commission.  I had earlier painted a large watercolor of this church as part of a commission of three paintings for an active parishioner of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Wilmington.  My patron had been active for years in the church, especially in running their annual Greek Festival fund raiser fair in June, so I incorporated the festival’s traditional Greek dancers in the scene.  Another active member of the Holy Trinity congregation saw a print of the watercolor at an art show and asked for a painting of Holy Trinity in the same spirit.

Here I presented, on a festooning scroll, modern Greek dancers in traditional dress approaching in a line from the right, and a line of classical Greek dancers with instrumental accompaniment cascading down from the left.  I made a custom frame echoing some elements of the church’s architecture.

AΓΙΑ ΤΡΙΑΣ has a beautiful interior, for me connecting the traditional iconographic style of the Orthodox church with early to mid-century art Deco art and design. There is a very similar Greek Orthodox church by the same architect in Tarpon Springs, Florida, a waterfront community built by Greek immigrants.  (When you go there eat at Dimitri’s and watch the boat traffic.)

Holy Trinity has a web site at https://holytrinitywilmington.org/about/
