Alaina Nouveau

Image
Alaina Nouveau This painting of our great-granddaughter was a Christmas gift to her mother.  I made use of metallic and iridescent paints which do not show well in the photograph.

Fenestral Portraits

Image
Fenestral Portraits In My Library In My Thoughts In My Library , my self-portrait on the left, shows me in front of the window of one of our library doors. The colors in the Queen Anne stained glass border are true to the actual window.  For  In My Thoughts , my portrait of Mary on the right, I've converted the glass to soft pastel colors which I used throughout the painting. I replaced the triangular glass corners with bluebirds. While each gallery-wrap painting is signed on the edge, as usual I have incorporated monograph signatures in the paintings. The book cover in my hands ...   And the trim on Mary's right sleeve...

Chiaroscuro

Image
Chiaroscuro  Here's a chiaroscuro painting  October Gold  as we enter autumn.    Another chiaroscuro painting is "Ryan Alone," based on my snapshots while he was performing at the Queen in Wilmington.  The master of chiaroscuro was Caravaggio, the 16-17th century Italian artist, a hotheaded brawler and murderer.

"In My Library"

Image
In My Library  In my Library  (acrylic on canvas)  is an imaginary self-portrait in front of one of my library doors.  At 18 x 24 inches it is approximately 3/4 life size. Here's an earlier self portrait,  Figments , from a couple of decades past.

Sydney's Service

Image
Sydney's Service A few days before the 1960 election I was a volunteer usher at at a John F. Kennedy speech and rally at San Francisco's Cow Palace convention center. In his speech Kennedy announced his plan for the Peace Corps.  At the end of the event I salvaged two Kennedy campaign posters adorning the walls.  Years later our granddaughter Sydney served three years in service in the Peace Corps.  When she returned I gave her one of the posters with a note recording its provenance. Earlier this week I did a painting imagining Sydney with the framed poster behind her.  The logo on her laptop is my signature monogram.
